International Speaker Presents on Nigerian Igbo Women Writers

Brescia University’s School of Education and the Contemporary Woman Program is excited to bring Shalini Nadaswaran, Ph.D. Candidate at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia to campus. Shalini is also a SLAI Fellow with the University of Malaya, Malaysia.

Shalini will give a presentation on her paper titled, “Rethinking Family Relationships in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus (2004) and Unoma Azuah’s Sky-High Flames (2005).” The paper is a culmination of research focusing on the growth and transformation of first, second and third generation Nigerian Igbo women writers. Shalini will show how these women went from being depicted in literature as mothers, daughters, and sometimes victims, to educated, wilful women who are also mothers and daughters.

The public is invited to attend Shalini’s half hour presentation on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 10:30 am in Brescia’s Administration Building, room 111. There will be light refreshments following.

Shalini will also present her research during the 37th Annual African Literature Association Conference in Athens, Ohio.
