Humanities and Fine Arts Majors

Art

Students choosing to pursue a major in Art are provided an opportunity to work with a variety of media so they may explore, develop, and emphasize their own individual skill set.  The program is designed not only to enhance the student’s technical skills, but also to cultivate an awareness of the historical and cultural value of art, aesthetics, and a personal approach to technique, composition, and subject matter in selected studio areas. Students may choose a concentration in any of the following areas: Ceramics, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, Printmaking, or Stained Glass.

English

A major in English provides students with a thorough study of literature and the English language that encourages clarity and originality of thought and expression, and fosters the growth of individual moral and aesthetic judgment.

English with an Emphasis in Professional Writing

The degree in English with an Emphasis in Professional Writing is designed to prepare students for careers in journalism, public relations, and communications. Students interested in pursuing graduate studies, particularly in fields such as business, social sciences, social work, law, and the sciences, may be interested in this path.  Course work includes broad applications relevant to virtually every career and will prepare students with essential communication skills for the 21st century workplace.

English with Secondary Teacher Certification

This major allows students to obtain a Secondary Teacher Certification (grades 8-12) along with an English major.

English with Kentucky Teacher Certification in Middle School Education

This major allows students to obtain Kentucky Teacher Certification in Middle School Education (grades 5-9) along with an English major.

Graphic Design

The Graphic Design program concentrates on the technical skills and creative problem solving techniques necessary to be successful in the design and advertising field. Relevant professional software packages are utilized to complete projects based on client criteria and marketing concepts. Design elements include, but are not limited to, typography, print media, website design and hosting, and digital animation. The Graphic Design program is supported by a foundation of fine arts foundation classes and electives.

Integrated Studies

The purpose of the integrated studies major is to offer students the freedom and responsibility to develop individualized programs. This major provides a broad educational experience that is more flexible than traditional programs. It also provides an opportunity for students to concentrate on a combination of areas that Brescia University may or may not offer as individual majors.

Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the Integrated Studies major cannot be awarded simultaneously with a major or minor in a separate academic area.

Liberal Arts (Associate Degree)

The Liberal Arts degree serves a three-fold purpose. First, it provides students who have not yet determined a career or major area of study to obtain a college degree. Second, it enables students to earn an associate degree that fulfills the majority of General Education requirements in preparation for a later pursuit of a baccalaureate degree. Finally, it offers students the opportunity to expand their educational horizons for the sake of learning itself, exploring some of the broad spectrum of human knowledge and culture for its own sake, while at the same time earning a degree.

Spanish*

A major in Spanish prepares students with a high level of proficiency while providing the fundamental knowledge of a liberal arts education. An intensive study of the Spanish language, literature, and culture provides students with a competitive career advantage. An optional study-abroad experience is available to students who pursue a Spanish major.

Teacher Education

Students may combine a major in Art with preparation for a Kentucky Teacher Certification to teach grades 9-12 (optional endorsement for elementary grades available) to pursue a career in art education. Brescia University School of Education (SOE) candidates are challenged to become professional educators committed to ethics, advocacy, service, and lifelong learning. Graduates serve with distinction in school systems throughout the country. All School of Education programs are approved by Kentucky’s Education Professional Standards Board.

Theology

The Theology program at Brescia University is grounded in the Roman Catholic faith tradition.  The program reflects the Second Vatican Council’s commitments to ecumenism, religious liberty, a deeper study of the wellsprings of the sources of the Catholic tradition, and a reaffirmation of traditional religious vocations. The Theology major serves to prepare students for graduate work in theological studies.

Theology with an Emphasis in Pastoral Studies

The Theology with an Emphasis in Pastoral Studies major (1) prepares students who desire to enter a vocation of Lay Ecclesial Ministry upon graduation; (2) prepares students desiring to study theology and ministry at the graduate level in preparation for a vocation to Lay Ecclesial Ministry or religious life; and (3) offers an opportunity for a double major to students who have an interest in theology and ministry but wish to pursue different career path.
