King’s Table Chosen to Receive Empty Bowls Funds

Empty Bowls of Owensboro, Kentucky has selected King’s Table Food Pantry as this year’s recipient of the event’s funds. The annual fundraiser, which is part of a national initiative to feed the hungry, will take place Thursday, April 20 at 6 pm in the Saints Joseph and Paul Catholic Church Community Center, located at 609 East 4th Street.

The Empty Bowls Committee accepted applications from area soup kitchens and food pantries but chose King’s Table to receive the funds because of their mission to reach an underserved population of individuals.

King’s Table started in 2009 after founder, Lisa Mourning, was volunteering at local food pantries and noticed there were no elderly or disabled individuals coming to get food.

“I realized they may not be able to drive, or manage a walker and carry the food back home without help,” Mourning said. “By January 2010, the King’s Table was born. We contacted the Housing Authority of Owensboro who was able to provide us with a list of seniors in need. Each month they review and update that list. We now have seven local churches that provide both volunteers and additional names of seniors in need.”

Currently, King’s Table delivers food to over 250 individuals each month on volunteers and donations only, often sharing in conversation and prayer with the recipients.

“By delivering to these homes, we are providing relationships that reach far beyond food. For this we are sincerely thankful,” Mourning said.

King’s Table plans to use the funds from Empty Bowls to expand the number of delivery teams and the number of seniors reached who are currently on waiting lists needing help.

The funds provided to King’s Table will come from proceeds garnered by the Empty Bowls event, including tickets sales, t-shirt sales and silent auction donations. The committee is currently accepting donations of silent auction items and baskets from local businesses and individuals.
