Award Notification from President Obama
Brescia University received the President’s Volunteer Service Award for the second year in a row for their service, commitment, and dedication to Junior Achievement (JA) of West Kentucky. This award is issued by the White House and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation for the 2013-2014 school year.
Brescia University had a total of 32 volunteers, which included faculty, staff and students. Together they put in a total of 520 hours with JA by teaching elementary, middle, and high school students about how to “generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace,” according to JA’s website.
“Congratulations to all who are involved in our work with Junior Achievement of West Kentucky,” said Fr. Larry Hostetter, Brescia University President. “For the second year in a row we have been recognized by President Obama. Thank you to everyone who exemplified the Brescia Difference to our community.”
Background on Award
The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation (the Council) was established in 2003 to recognize the contributions volunteers are making in communities and encourage more people to serve. The Council created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service. The program continues as an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS).
