The Kentucky Arts Council is hosting a five-month exhibit, Uncommon Wealth, in Lexington, KY in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Al Smith Individual Artist Fellowship Program. Brescia University professor of art, David Stratton, is one of 62 artists whose work was selected for exhibition.
The Kentucky Arts Council’s Al Smith fellowship program was established in 1983 to recognize creative excellence and to assist in the professional development of Kentucky artists. The Fellowship is named after well-known Kentucky newsman Al Smith, who served as chair of the Kentucky Arts Council board of directors from 1977-79 and 1981-84. In all, 383 fellowship recipients have been named with mediums from the visual arts, literary arts, media arts, composing and choreography.
The artwork in the exhibit, at the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center, provides a snapshot of the work created by fellowship recipients in the visual arts. In the 30 years of the program, 174 visual artists have received fellowships; 62 of those artists are featured in the exhibit.
