Join Brescia University for a presentation on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 7 pm in Taylor Lecture Hall to learn how to become involved in social justice efforts related to education and poverty.
Jerry Kuthy will talk about the way Christian theology relates to social justice, and the ways in which social justice and faith benefit us all. Jerry will speak about the relationship between progressive Christian faith and the commitment to social justice, with a special emphasis on how that impacts education in the United States. In his talk, Jerry will take the audience on a journey exploring the ways in which faith invites all of us to examine our commitment to people who are poor and marginalized in an effort to enrich our communities and ourselves.
Jerry currently serves as a senior consultant at Communities in Schools of Richmond, VA, utilizing his experience in the non-profit and education sectors to develop school readiness programs in impoverished neighborhoods. In the past, Jerry worked as an inner-city teacher on the Southside of Chicago and headed the Accelerate Institute’s urban teaching programs. He also has lived in the Su Casa Catholic Worker House in Chicago, where he worked with immigrant families in their efforts to escape homelessness and domestic violence. Jerry has taught at DePaul University on child poverty and social justice and served as the Academic Dean for Johns Hopkins University’s Civic Leadership Institute in Baltimore. His focus on ending poverty through education has also led to international humanitarian trips in Central America and East Africa.
