Brescia University’s Fr. Leonard Alvey Library is proud to be a host site for the distribution of several hundred books as part of World Book Night on April 23, 2013.
On April 23, 25,000 volunteers from Berkeley to Boston and Sitka to Sarasota will give away half a million free books in more than 6,000 towns and cities across the country.
Volunteers from the Owensboro/Daviess County area are picking up their books at Brescia’s Fr. Leonard Alvey Library and sharing them in locations as diverse as VA hospitals, roller skating rinks, public transportation, nursing homes, schools, food pantries, and more. The Fr. Leonard Alvey Library is proud to be a partner in World Book Night U.S. for a second year.
On Tuesday, April 16 at 3 pm, the Greater Owensboro area volunteers will meet for a pre-World Book Night reception at the Fr. Leonard Alvey Library. The public is welcome to attend and meet the volunteers and hear about the books they selected and where they will be distributing them. Each volunteer chose one of 30 selections available for this event and will receive 20 copies to distribute.
World Book Night U.S. is an ambitious campaign to give thousands of free, specially printed paperbacks to light or non-readers across America on one day. The mission of World Book Night is to seek out those without the means or access to printed books.
World Book Night launched in the UK and Ireland two years ago and in the United States last year. The date of April 23 was chosen because it is UNESCO’s World Book Day, chosen due to the anniversary of Cervantes’ death, as well as Shakespeare’s birth and death.
