Empty Bowls 2013

Empty Bowls 2“Feeding Hungry People one Bowl at a Time”

Empty Bowls of Owensboro, Kentucky hosts their annual fundraiser on Thursday, April 25 at First Presbyterian Church, 1328 Griffith Avenue.

This local event is part of a national one to raise funds for those in need of food.

The $15 tickets are on sale now and may be purchased through the Brescia University Public Relations Office. Your ticket allows you to select a ceramic bowl from hundreds of handcrafted bowls made especially for this event by local artisans and students of Brescia University.  Brescia’s Art Department has supplied the clay, glaze, and location for the bowls to be created. You then will use your bowl to be served the soup of your choice available that night. Student volunteers from the Brescia Clay Club will wash your bowl for you when you are finished and it is yours to take home at the end of the evening.

Entertainment will be provided by the First Presbyterian Choir and the Kentucky Wesleyan singers.

Back by popular demand will be the silent auction. Local artists are creating one-of-a-kind pieces that will be available exclusively that evening. New this year will be the opportunity to come and go as you please. There will be two main serving times: 5:00 and 6:00 pm. Attendees are encouraged to eat and bid on the silent auction items and then feel free to leave as they please. There will be an option to “Buy It Now” if you see a silent auction piece you absolutely must have. Only 300 tickets will be available for this event which was at capacity last year when it was held at First Christian Church.

The Empty Bowls Committee is currently accepting applications from area soup kitchens and food pantries to be considered as a recipient of this year’s event. Those interested have until March 15th to submit an application. Applications may be found online at http://www.brescia.edu/empty-bowls-application-form. Last year nearly $6,000 was split between First Christian Church and Crossroads.  Money is already coming in for Empty Bowls as an Ecumenical Lenten Group has formed in Owensboro that meets on Wednesdays during Lent. The group, comprised of six area churches, has pledged the offerings raised during their services will go to Empty Bowls. Already $1,000 has been pledged for this effort.

Mission Statement – “Feeding Hungry People one Bowl at a Time”

Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement to help end hunger.  Area potters volunteer to make ceramic bowls, while others donate everything for a dinner of soup and fellowship.  One hundred percent of the proceeds stay in this community and go to local food pantries.  Our goals are to raise money to help organizations fight hunger, to raise awareness about the issues of hunger and food security, and to help bring about an attitude that will not allow hunger to exist.
