New Men’s Head Basketball Coach

Brescia University announces the hiring of Josh Gibson as the new Head Coach for Men’s Basketball. Josh comes to Brescia with eight years of coaching experience. He most recently hails from Murray State University, where he was the Operations/Video Coordinator. Prior to this position he was the Head Assistant Coach at Sewanee, the University of the South (TN) for three years.  In addition he was the recruiting coordinator as well as assistant coach at Maryville University (MO) and also spent a year at KIAC member Indiana University Southeast.

His coaching highlights include mentoring 21 All-Conference selections including three All-Americans and two conference Players of the Year. His teams have led their respective leagues in 26 statistical categories, including six in the top-ten nationally. In post-season play, his programs compiled a .670 team winning percentage.

“Every assistant dreams about their first head coaching job, but to get the chance to lead a program with a history of success and an unbelievable location for my family is almost too good to be true.  The city of Owensboro and this University have so much to offer, I am truly humbled and blessed to have been given this chance to lead my own program,” said Josh.

Brescia University Director of Athletics, Larry Cox, commented, “As a new Athletic Director charged with the task of hiring a new men’s basketball coach it magnified the responsibility to find the right person to lead the Brescia Bearcats basketball team into the future.  The number of quality coaches who were interested in the position was extremely gratifying and humbling.  In Josh Gibson I believe we have found a young man who will not only do an exemplary job with the coaching aspect of the position, but just as important will live and teach the mission of the University to his student-athletes.”

The Brescia Bearcats finished the 2011-2012 season third in the KIAC and the team will have four starters returning for this fall.

When asked what his approach will be as he takes over the program, Josh remarked, “I know that if we do things the right way and focus on the details, the winning will take care of itself.  We will emphasize integrity and responsibility within our team, and hold each other accountable for the little things that will ultimately determine our level of success.”

Josh also places an emphasis on Brescia’s mission. “I intend to recruit high quality student-athletes who possess a commitment to excellence in their athletic, academic, personal, and social endeavors.”

Cox believes Josh will integrate well into the Brescia community as well as the Owensboro community. “A Kentucky native, he is a tremendous family man who will immerse himself in the community and who will recruit quality individuals as well as quality athletes who will excel in the classroom, in the local area, and on the court.”

Josh and his wife Courtney have three children, Haley, Noah, and Avery.

Josh received a B.A., M.A., and M.S. from Murray State University and is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy: Educational Counseling and Psychology from the University of Louisville.
