2016-2017 Spirit of Angela Award Nominations

During Founder’s Week there is a tradition of recognizing one male and one female student who possesses in remarkable ways the spirit of Saint Angela Merici. Angela Merici was a leader in great and small ways and touched the lives of many. She is responsible for founding the Ursuline Sisters whom she named after Saint Ursula. It was Saint Angela’s humble wish that her company of followers not be named after herself.

The Ursuline Sisters founded Brescia University in the early 1900’s as first a junior college for women in Maple Mount, Kentucky, before it moved to Owensboro and became Brescia College in 1950. It received University status in 1998.

Saint Angela attracted people from all walks of life; rich and poor, nobility and common folk, learned and uneducated. She is often noted for her hospitality, her healthy sense of self in relationship to God and others, her contemplative spirit while being involved in the world, and her ability to be a reconciler and peacemaker. Any member of the Brescia family (Students, Faculty, Staff, Administrators) may nominate a Brescia student to receive the “Spirit of Angela Award.”

Founder’s Week will take place at Brescia University January 23-27, 2017. Founder’s Day Convocation is on Tuesday, January 24, at 10:30 am in Taylor Lecture Hall. The two recipients for the Spirit of Angela awards will be recognized during this convocation. Nominations must be received by noon on December 2, 2015.
