Brescia University is pleased to welcome Dr. Belle Wheelan, the President of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC), as the 2017 Brescia University Commencement Speaker. SACS COC is the regional body for the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the Southern states. It serves as the common denominator of shared values and practices among the diverse institutions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Latin America and other international sites approved by the Commission that award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, or doctoral degrees.

Dr. Wheelan’s career spans over 40 years and includes the roles of faculty member, chief student services officer, campus provost, college president and Secretary of Education.  In several of those roles she was the first African American and/or woman to serve in those capacities, including her current role.

Dr. Wheelan received her Bachelor’s degree from Trinity University in Texas (1972) with a double major in Psychology and Sociology; her Master’s from Louisiana State University (1974) in Developmental Educational Psychology; and her Doctorate from the University of Texas at Austin (1984) in Educational Administration with a special concentration in community college leadership.

Brescia University welcomes Dr. Wheelan as she addresses the graduating class of 2017 on Saturday, May 6th, at 10:00 a.m. at the RiverPark Center. Commencement is open to the public and seating is available on a first come, first served basis.

Other graduation activities include Honors Convocation and the Celebration of Excellence to be held on Sunday, April 23rd beginning at 2:00 pm and a Baccalaureate Service on Friday, May 5th at 7:00 pm at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Both of these events are open to the public.
