Brescia University Holds Art Exhibit Honoring Late Professor

Brescia University will be hosting a commemorative art exhibit showcasing the art and teaching of the late Sr. Mary Diane Taylor from September 3rd until October 26th in the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies. Taylor specialized in color theory, stained glass, tapestry, quilting, calligraphy, design, art history, and printmaking.

An opening reception will be held on Friday, September 3rd at 7 PM which is open to the public. Food and drinks will be available. Masking will be required while inside the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies.

This art exhibit will be the first held in the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies. The opening reception will be hosted by Brescia University President, Fr. Larry Hostetter, Brescia University Art Department, and the BU Art in Service to the Community. During the event the public will get the opportunity to view stained glass and stitched artwork, as well as a collection of student artwork and memories reflecting Taylor’s ongoing influence in her students’ lives.

Sr. Mary Diane Taylor was an Ursuline Sister of Mount Saint Joseph for 69 years before her passing earlier this year. Prior to Brescia she started the art department at Owensboro Catholic High School and taught at the Mount Saint Joseph Academy. She taught at the University for 51 years before retiring in 2018. In 2016, the administration building was renamed Bartholomy-Taylor Hall in her honor.

“We are eager to be able to utilize the art gallery in the new C.E. Field Center for which it was designed. To showcase student art, as well as those who have left a lasting impression on the Brescia University community, was the vision for this space from the beginning,” stated Brescia University President, Fr. Larry Hostetter. “To honor the work of a beloved member of our campus for such a long time, Sr. Mary Diane Taylor, for the opening exhibit is a nod to our Ursuline foundation and to the impact of Sr. Diane herself. From 1967 until her retirement in 2018 as a professor of art at Brescia, she taught so many young artists. A special thanks to David Stratton, Professor of Art, who devoted his time and talent to seeing this exhibit through to fruition. “

The exhibit will be open from 8:30 AM until 4 PM Monday through Friday. Please wear your mask while inside the C.E. Field Center for Professional Studies. For more information, contact Rachel Whelan, Director of Public Relations and Marketing at 270.686.2110 or [email protected].
