Brescia University Celebrating 25 Years of Social Work Education

Brescia University is celebrating 25 years of providing social work education during March, nationally recognized as “Social Work Month”.  In 1993, as it was known then, Brescia College, began an undergraduate Social Work degree program in response to the growing need of service for trained social workers. Throughout its 25 years, the Marilyn Younger Conley School of Social Work, named for the program founder, has changed the landscape of social work education.

The Brescia University Social Work program has a rich history.  Since its inception, the University has awarded, over 550 Bachelor of Social Work degrees.  In 2009, the University was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education to offer a fully online BSW program.  Brescia University’s program was the first of its kind in the nation and remained the only accredited only online degree program not only in Kentucky, but in the US until 2015.

In 2016, Brescia University expanded the degree offerings from the Marilyn Younger Conley School of Social Work with the addition of a Master of Social Work degree.  This degree is available completely online.  Brescia University’s MSW program is only the second in Kentucky, along with the University of Louisville, to offer a program that allows students from all 50 states to attend full-time via 100 percent online delivery format with no residency required.   Since its inception 31 students have graduated with their MSW and an additional 28 are expected.  Recently, the Master of Social Work received accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Commission on Accreditation (COA), giving Brescia University’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program Initial Accreditation for 4 years.

Continuing Education is also a main focus of Brescia University’s Marilyn Younger Conley School of Social Work.  The School provides four online, self-paced courses for a student to continue their education and gain licensure in some areas.  The University also offers on-ground LCSW Supervision courses.  The on-ground courses covers a variety of topics within the scope of social work.  These courses support the University’s focus on lifelong learning.
