The Empty Bowls Committee is currently accepting applications from area soup kitchens and food pantries to be considered as a recipient of this year’s event funds. The deadline to submit an application is March 6th. Empty Bowls is a local organization that is dedicated to the national effort of feeding the hungry. Funds are raised through an annual event and is provided to local shelters, churches and other organizations that aid in the effort.
This year’s event will be held on Tuesday, April 23 at 6 pm in the Brescia University gymnasium, located in the Moore Center at 717 Frederica Street.

Last year, over $8,500 was raised for Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church to help them continue to serve those in need with more than just food, but a family meal. In addition, the church collects coats, gloves, caps, and blankets and furnishes these items to the individuals they serve who may be in need in the cold months. Shoes, boots, and clothing have even been provided in instances when the need was there. The funds allowed Breckenridge Street to purchase supplies, like meat, for the meals provided at the church.
Tickets for the event will go on sale March 11th and can be purchased in advance by cash or check for $16, including sales tax, and can be purchased at the Brescia University spirit store, Bearcat Corner. Bearcat Corner will be open from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM Monday through Friday for ticket purchases and is located in The Moore Center.
Only 400 tickets will be available for this event and tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis. If all tickets are not presold, they will be available to purchase at the door.
Your ticket allows you to select a ceramic bowl from hundreds of handcrafted bowls made especially for this event through community events, by local artisans and students from Brescia University and other community schools. Brescia’s Art Department supplies the clay, glaze, and location for the bowls to be created. Each participant at the event will then use their selected bowl to receive one of four soups made available by local chefs and churches.
Silent auction baskets of various themes donated by local organizations are also available. Empty Bowls is currently seeking donations doe the silent auction.
