Brescia to Launch Drive for Girls Inc.

Brescia University has partnered with Girls Incorporated of Owensboro-Daviess County (Girls Inc.) to provide March programming for the organization’s participants and to host a drive to benefit Girls Inc. The programming, part of Compassion Week, sponsored by the Brescia University Psychology Club, will include a site visit, as well as, student athlete guest speakers. The drive will kick off on March 16th and community members are welcomed to donate items to the cause.

On March 13th, Girls Inc. will visit Brescia University for the first event of Compassion Week, where they will participate in a social psychology activity as a group. The girls will also have the opportunity to participate in a volleyball clinical, hosted by the Brescia University Psychology Club and the Brescia University Volleyball team.

“I planned this event with Girls Inc. because I greatly admire their organization’s dedication to this community, particularly to the youth. I believe that my personal mission, as well as the mission we intended for Compassion Week, correlates very well with theirs and I hope we can continue to empower the young women of this community in the future.” said Alex Satterfield, Brescia University Psychology Club President, and member of the Brescia University Volleyball team.

Following this event, Satterfield will be joined by other female athletes from Brescia University who will visit the Girls Inc. campus to speak with participants. The discussion will be centered on having sound body and sound mind and how to be a successful female collegiate athlete, both in play and in the classroom. The athletes will touch on the Champions of Character Program that is intertwined in the collegiate athletic experience at Brescia University, as a Champions of Character Five-Star Institution, focusing on five key areas; character training, academic focus, character recognition, character promotion, and conduct in competition.

The Brescia University Psychology Club will round out Compassion Week by kicking off a drive for Girls Inc. that will run through April 20th. Brescia University clubs, organizations, and athletic teams will be collecting items from the approved list to benefit the Girls Inc. organization. Items include:

  • Art Supplies
  • Hygiene/Feminine Products
  • Recreational Items (jump ropes, hula hoops, balls)
  • Games and Puzzles
  • Non-perishable Food Items

Community members are welcomed to participate in the drive, and are encouraged to drop donated items off at the Moore Center on Frederica Street.
