Former 6’7 Brescia University forward, Austin Morris, has committed to play basketball for Baskets Wolmirstedt in Wolmirstedt, Germany. Morris, who hails from Evansville, Indiana, spent four years as a Bearcat and is the second Bearcat to begin his professional basketball career overseas this season. Morris’ teammate Jermain Langley announced earlier in the year his commitment to play professional basketball in Hannover, Germany.
The opportunity came after Morris impressed team agents with his highlight videos, game films and professional resume. He will be leaving the states in late August and is looking forward to traveling abroad.Baskets Wolmirstedt, coached by Nicola Slavojevic, is a European basketball team that along with a host of other teams make up the Regionalliga.
“I look forward to many things to come,” said Morris. “I’m so excited to meet new people and teammates, try new food and go places I’ve never dreamed of going. In my time overseas I hope to become a better basketball player and a well-rounded person. I can’t wait to see what’s next for me.”
During his time at Brescia University, Morris, a graduate of Bosse High School, was an integral part of the team and put up a total of 1,375 points, had 769 rebounds and 205 assists in his career. He was ranked number two in the Division in blocks per game (2.880) and number four in the Division in total blocks (72) for the 2015-2016 season.
Morris was also named the 2014-2015 KIAC Player of the Year, the same year that the Brescia University men’s basketball team claimed the KIAC South Division title, and went to the first round of the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in the school’s history. That year he was 6th in the conference in points per game (16.07), 1st in rebounds per game (10.15), 1st in blocks per game (3.44), 1st in field goal percentage (60.1), 4th in free throw percentage (80.3) and was second in the conference with 13 double-doubles. He also ranked 1st in NAIA Division II blocks per game (3.44), 6th in rebounds per game (10.15) and 11th in field goal percentage (60.1)
“My college career prepared me to be ready for this opportunity to continue my career as a professional,” stated Morris. “It also prepared me to be ready for the hard work it will take to continue to play [basketball] after college and embrace my blessings, not everyone gets a chance to play after college.”
