John Swickrath enters his first season as the Lady Bearcats head coach. Swickrath comes to Brescia University from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. While at Lynchburg he led his team to two of the schools most successful seasons in the last 22 years.
Swickrath was promoted to guide the program for the 2003-04 season after one year as an assistant at LC. At the age of 25, he was one of the youngest head coaches ever at the Division III level.
In 2003-04, Swickrath led the Hornet program to its most wins since the 1996-97 season, and also defeated ODAC rival Roanoke College in Salem, VA for the first time in 18 years. The young mentor also led LC to a 54-50 ODAC Tournament defeat of #1 seeded Randolph-Macon - the first and only #8 seed to defeat a #1 seed in conference tournament history, spanning 29 years. The 2004-05 squad almost repeated the huge ODAC Tournament upset, losing to top-seeded Randolph-Macon in overtime.
His teams were also successful in the classroom under his leadership. His players improved from a 2.2 team GPA his first semester as head coach, to a 3.1 team GPA his last six semesters at LC.
Swickrath was a four-year letter-winner and 2001 graduate of Denison University ( Ohio) where he averaged 13 points and nine rebounds in his senior season, and was a two time all-conference selection. Swickrath also started for the Big Red on the diamond and the football field. Swickrath earned a B.A. in History and Education from Denison University and holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Indiana Wesleyan University.
