The study of humanities lies at the heart of a Brescia University education. In the Humanities Division, students explore literature, language, history, philosophy, ministry and theology. From Beowulf to Napoleon and Immanuel Kant to Chuck Palahniuk, the Humanities Division promotes enlightenment through literature.

Humanities

The Humanities curriculum provides each student with a solid foundation for a variety of careers ranging from writing and teaching to computer software design. Classroom study combined with internships and field experience equips students for a variety of career and life-enriching experiences.

The Humanities Division sponsors a wide variety of clubs and student organizations, including The Broadcast, the Ichabod Society, and the Spanish Club.

The Broadcast, a weekly student newspaper written “By Students, For Students,” provides experience in the journalism field by reporting campus news, athletics, and events. Student columns, editorials, and satires also grace the pages to add a forum for students to voice opinions and a medium for humorists to perform. The After Hours page publishes student creative writing—poems, short stories, and excerpts—providing an avenue for students to display their literary creations.

The Ichabod Society is a student organization that promotes reading and the arts. Each semester, Ichabod Society members travel to local venues for poetry readings, plays and other literary performances. Last semester the group traveled to Louisville to listen to a poetry reading by former United States Poet Laureate Billy Collins.

The Spanish Club sponsors a variety of activities that promote awareness of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Past activities included inviting a guest speaker from La Plaza Immigrant Community Center, helping to host the Brescia University Foreign Language Conference, cooking for and hosting the Día de la raza Forum and Celebration, and designing and implementing the National Mix it Up Day. The Spanish Club also puts on at least one dance party annually, inviting all Brescia students as well as local high school Spanish Clubs to participate, and performs a variety show each spring for the Ursuline Sisters at Mount St. Joseph. The Spanish Club is open to all Brescia students, whatever their experience with Spanish language and Hispanic culture.
